Knee Sleeve Guide

Knee sleeves: how to choose the right thickness

When it comes to staying active, healthy and stable knees are everything. Whether you're chasing a new squat PR, grinding through a Hyrox race or logging long miles on the road, the right knee sleeve gives you the compression, warmth and support to train with confidence. At Rehband, we've been developing knee sleeves for athletes for decades – and we know one sleeve doesn't fit every sport. This guide explains the differences between our 3mm, 5mm and 7mm knee sleeves, so you can find the one that matches the way you train.

"There are three different thicknesses of knee support, all designed for different usage areas. The 3mm knee sleeve provides ideal support for high-agility or endurance workouts. The 5mm benefits the athlete in varied training where both agility and support are required. The 7mm offers powerful stabilization for heavy lifting."

says Johan Bohlin, physiotherapist and former Head of Development at Rehband.

What does a knee sleeve actually do?

A knee sleeve wraps the joint in compressive neoprene. That does three things: it increases blood flow and keeps the joint warm, it improves proprioception – your sense of where your knee is and how it moves – and it provides mechanical support under load. The result: your knees feel more stable, you move with more control, and you can train harder for longer. Unlike knee pads, sleeves have no padding; unlike rigid braces, they don't restrict your natural range of motion.

3mm knee sleeves – built for speed and endurance

The thinner the sleeve, the more freedom of movement. Our 3mm knee sleeves are made for sports with constant, dynamic motion: running, cycling, Hyrox and endurance-focused workouts. You get light compression and warmth without ever feeling restricted – ideal when your knees flex thousands of times per session.

Best for: running, Hyrox, cycling, endurance training

5mm knee sleeves – the all-rounder

The 5mm sleeve is our most popular thickness – and for good reason. It hits the sweet spot between mobility and support, making it the go-to choice for functional fitness and CrossFit, where a single workout can jump from box jumps to heavy thrusters. If you train varied and want one sleeve that does it all, start here.

Best for: CrossFit, functional fitness, HIIT, mixed training

7mm knee sleeves – maximum support for heavy lifting

When the barbell gets heavy, the 7mm sleeve delivers. The thicker neoprene provides powerful stabilization and a noticeable rebound out of the bottom of a squat – which is why it's the standard among powerlifters, weightlifters and athletes doing heavy CrossFit. Ideal for training built around static, high-load movements.

Best for: powerlifting, weightlifting, heavy CrossFit, bodybuilding

How to find your size

How should a knee sleeve fit?

A knee sleeve should fit tight – noticeably tighter than a sock – without cutting off circulation or pinching behind the knee. If you can pull it on effortlessly, it's probably too big; if your foot tingles, it's too small. Measure your knee circumference as shown in our size guide and video above, and when in doubt between two sizes: competitive lifters often size down for maximum rebound, while athletes in dynamic sports usually stay true to size for comfort.

Frequently asked questions

Which knee sleeve thickness is best for squats?

For heavy, low-rep squatting, 7mm gives you the most support and rebound. If squats are just one part of a varied workout, 5mm is the more versatile choice.

3mm, 5mm or 7mm – what if I do several sports?

Match the sleeve to your most frequent training. If you mix dynamic and heavy sessions evenly, the 5mm is the strongest all-rounder – it's our best-selling thickness for exactly that reason.

Should I wear one knee sleeve or two?

That's personal preference. Sleeves are sold as singles or pairs depending on the model – many strength athletes wear both for symmetry, while some runners only sleeve one knee.

Can I wear knee sleeves for every workout?

Yes. Many athletes wear them every session for warmth and consistency. Just take them off between long rest periods so your skin can breathe.

What's the difference between a knee sleeve and a knee brace?

A sleeve provides compression, warmth and support while keeping full range of motion. A rigid brace restricts movement and serves a different purpose. For sports performance, a sleeve is what you want.

How do I wash a knee sleeve?

Hand-wash or machine-wash cold on gentle, then air-dry. Regular washing keeps the neoprene fresh – especially after sweaty sessions. See our full care guide for more on washing, drying and removing odour.
