How to pick the right knee sleeves for you: 3mm, 5mm or 7mm

Rehband Knee Support are anatomically shaped support sleeves for knees, providing both compression and warmth to help increase an athlete’s performance and to prevent injuries. The construction of the Rehband Rx Knee Support is built on a unique patent, securing its anatomical fit. The shape allows the product to follow the body’s motions, ensuring that it stays in place during workouts.

“There are three different thicknesses of knee sleeves, all designed for different usage areas. The 3mm thick knee sleeve provides ideal support for high agility or endurance workouts. The 5mm thick knee sleeve benefits the athlete in a varied training where both agility and support is required. The 7mm thick knee sleeve offers powerful stabilization for heavy lifting and extra support during rehabilitation”, says Johan Bohlin, former Physiotherapist and Head of Development at Rehband.

Knee sleeves are designed to protect your knees when you are injured, but also to prevent injuries and re-injuries. They work by providing warmth and compression to the knees. The compression increases the blood flow and the receptive input from the knee, helping an athlete perform more controlled and stable movements. The warming effect of the knee sleeves helps with increasing blood flow quicker, and is effective for keeping knees warm throughout an activity.

Traditionally, the 3mm knee sleeves are worn more by long distance runners looking for extra stability and support in their run, and the 7mm knee sleeves by weightlifters looking to lift some extra kilos with the help of extra knee support. The 5mm knee sleeve can be used for all sports and activities.

“If you have never used a knee sleeve before and you don’t have a knee injury, the best way of figuring out what thickness is right for you is by trying it on and imagining how it would feel to use it for the activities you have planned. For size, the compression should feel the same throughout the whole knee. If you weigh a little more, it can also be a good idea to increase one thickness to provide extra support to your knees”, says Johan.

Rx Knee Support 3mm: For endurance sports

The 3mm thick knee sleeve benefits athletes in endurance and long distance training. It is lighter, and ideal for endurance sports when you want to carry as light equipment as possible. The 3mm knee sleeve supports and athlete when they are starting to get tired at the end of a work out, and helps the wearer regain control of their knee movements.

Rx Knee Support 5mm: For mixed activity

This 5mm thick knee sleeve benefits the athlete in a varied training where both agility and support is required. The 5mm knee sleeve can be used for most sports, ranging from long distance runners looking for extra support to the knees to gym fitness. A general knee sleeve that can be used for all types of activities.

Rx Knee Support 7mm: For shorter, heavier activity

This 7mm thick knee sleeve offers powerful stabilization for heavy lifting and extra support during rehabilitation. Historically, the 7mm has been most used by weightlifters needing extra support during a lift, but today it is also common in gym fitters for those doing heavy lifting. The 7mm gives a very distinct receptive input and awareness of the knee, to ensure that shorter activities are performed more precisely and securely.
