Interview with Tia Clair-Toomey: Three-Time CrossFit Games Champion

We recently caught up with Rehband Ambassador and CrossFit Games legend, Tia-Clair Toomey. Learn about Tia’s athletic journey, knee sleeve choices, and how she keeps her life balanced in our here in out latest article.

Rehband: Tell us about your background – what were you like as a teen?
Tia Clair-Toomey: I was very sporty, I enjoyed competing and I loved outdoor activities with my family and friends. My parents were big believers in introducing different experiences to my sisters and I and it helped me be very open minded in trying new things.

How do Shane or a close friend describe you as a person/as an athlete?
Shane and my family have always said I was determined to chase after whatever I set my mind to, I also loved proving people wrong.

What are your strengths/weaknesses as an athlete?
I don’t consider I have any weaknesses, I just know I can always improve and evolve, not only as an athlete but a person.

What athletes inspired you the most in your athletic journey?
I never had a particular idol besides my parents that I looked up too but I did appreciate seeing and hearing different achievements people achieve throughout their lifetime and couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to achieve and overcome challenges throughout my life that I could look back on and be proud of.

Favorite TV shows or movies?
I go through stages but I love Suits, New Girl, Scandal and lots of Action movies.

Now that you live in the United States, how are you adjusting? What is different or surprising to you about the country? It’s always interesting to hear a new perspective!
I am absolutely loving my time spent in the US, we have developed a number of relationships that will be lifelong friendships.

What is your favorite part of CrossFit?
This is a hard one, but I love the challenges and opportunities that Crossfit has provided for me. I am so grateful for this sport.

To someone thinking about trying out the sport, what would you tell them?
To be open minded, go to a few different CrossFit gyms to see which one best suits you and embrace the community that the gym offers because it’s a very special thing to be a part of. It makes pushing yourself in a hard workout that much easier.

What did it mean to you, representing Australia in the Olympics in Olympic lifting?
Honored, proud and excited! This was one of the most incredible experiences I have ever been a part of.

What can we learn from your book, “How I became the Fittest Woman on Earth: My Story so Far”?
Where it all began, how I overcame obstacles along my journey, challenges I faced and the most important people that have helped me along the way.

We know you use both the 5mm and 7mm knee sleeves, do you use certain ones for specific workouts?
I use my 7mm Rx Knee Sleeves throughout all my lifting movements to help protect my knees and reduce any injury and I use my 5mm for workouts with pistols or wall balls to help reduce the constant impact of multiple squatting.

Any products, other than knee sleeves, do you recommend?
I love my compression socks for leg circulation long flights and my elbow sleeves.

Why Rehband?
When I very first started Weightlifting in 2014 I bought my very first pair of Rehband’s due to my weightlifting coach Miles Wydall recommending them and I have never looked back.

In general, what’s important for you when you shop training stuff?
Making sure it feels comfortable and helps me perform and is affordable.

How do you plan your outfits? Spend a lot of time?
I don’t have to put much thought into it as I wear NOBULL apparel and footwear and they have such incredible products it’s easy to feel good, look good.

Tia on injury Prevention & Health

How do you prevent injuries? Special warm-up? Mobility exercises?
Making sure I’m fine tuning my nutrition and fueling the body with the right nutrients is super important. I also do ROMWOD to stay on top of loose muscles.

Have you had any injuries and if so, how did they affect your training?
This is something I talk about in my book. Yes, in 2014 I faced a very severe back injury due to over training and not listening to the body but I learnt so much from that experience.

What is Tia’s go-to cheat food?
TimTams (an Australian chocolate biscuit) & Peanut M’n’M’s

How do you balance work and family?
Shane and I have been able to balance this very well and I believe you learn and grow overtime to what best suits you as an individual, couple, friend or family member. As long as I don’t lose who I am as a person and live life to my true values, my work, family and friendship balance will be where is needs to be to be fully fulfilled.

What ways do you recharge for another season of training?
I don’t go into the gym for about 1-2 months and I do things that I normally have to decline throughout the season. I love my downtime.
